How to Toast Pine Nuts (2 Ways)

Toasted pine nuts add a nutty crunch to salads and pastas! Here’s how to toast pine nuts to bring out their unique nutty flavor.

Toasted pine nuts

Toasted pine nuts are my little secret to making recipes taste amazing. They add a warm, nutty essence and crunch to everything from salads to pasta to crostini. These Italian nuts are delicious on their own, but toast them up and they’re next level! As is true with any nut, toasting enhances the flavor.

Here’s how to toast pine nuts! Once you’ve tried it once, you’ll find yourself using it again and again to enhance all your meals.

Pine Nuts 101

Pine nuts are the seeds of certain types of pine trees, found inside the pine cones. They’re also known as pignoli, the name in Italian. They have a very high oil content, which is why they toast quickly: and they burn quickly too, if you don’t keep an eyeon them!

Pine nuts are notoriously expensive because they’re difficult to harvest and are only grown in a few regions of the world. If you can’t find them, here are several pine nut substitutes.

How to Toast Pine Nuts on the Stovetop

Make toasted pine nuts on the stovetop when you have a small quantity of nuts and want to make them quickly. Just a few minutes in a hot pan, and the flavor is even warmer and nuttier. Here’s what to know:

  • Pros and cons: This method is fast, and it takes only 3 minutes! However, toasting nuts on the stovetop can cook unevenly, and it’s harder to toast large quantities.
  • How to do it (go to recipe): Place the nuts in a dry skillet—don’t add oil! Heat over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until golden and fragrant. Do not leave the stove because the nuts can burn very easily.

How to Toast Pine Nuts in the Oven

Make toasted pine nuts in the oven when you have time to preheat the oven! Choose this method if you want to make more than 1 cup of toasted pine nuts.

  • Pros and cons: This method cooks the nuts more evenly than the stovetop method, and you can cook lots of nuts at once. It does take longer to cook, and you’ll need to wait for the oven to preheat first.
  • Basic oven method (go to recipe): Preheat to 350°F. Place the nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet, then bake for 5 minutes until golden and fragrant. Don’t leave the oven unattended because it can burn easily.

Other Methods: Microwave, Air Fryer & Toaster Oven

Here are a few alternative methods for toasting pine nuts. With all of these, keep an eye on the nuts as they can go from golden to burned in seconds, and make sure to pour into a bowl immediately once they’re done so they can cool:

  • Microwave: Spread the nuts on a plate. Microwave 1 minute, stir, then continue in 30-second bursts until golden, usually 2 to 4 minutes total.
  • Air fryer: Place the nuts in an oven safe dish, then air fry at 325°F for 3 to 4 minutes, shaking halfway.
  • Toaster oven: Place the nuts on a baking sheet in a single layer and toast at 350°F. Start checking at 2 minutes; the total time should be about 4 minutes but keep checking often so they don’t burn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need oil to toast pine nuts?

No. Pine nuts have enough natural oil to toast well in a dry pan.

Should I toast pine nuts for pesto?

If you’d like to! Traditional pesto uses raw pine nuts, but toasted ones make the sauce nuttier with a richer flavor. Let them cool before blending.

How do I know when pine nuts are done toasting?

Look for an even golden color with a few darker spots, and a nutty aroma. Remember to pour them right into a bowl after removing from the heat.

Why are pine nuts so expensive?

The pine cones take two to three years to mature, and removing the seeds is a slow process: often done with manual labor!

Can I toast pine nuts ahead of time?

Yes. Cool them and store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or refrigerated for up to 1 month.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pine nuts (or any quantity; for any more than 1 cup use the oven method)

Instructions

  1. Stovetop method: Place the nuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium heat. Remove immediately from the heat and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.
  2. Oven method: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the nuts on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 5 minutes until fragrant and golden brown, stirring once. Do not stray far from the oven, since the nuts can go from toasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop the cooking.
