Apple Cider Mule

This easy apple cider mule combines a classic Moscow mule with sweet apple cider for a festive fall cocktail. Mix vodka, fresh lime, cider, and ginger beer in just 3 minutes!

Apple cider mule

Here’s a festive cocktail that’s perfect for cool weather: the apple cider mule! Everyone loves a classic Moscow Mule, and this seasonal spin is even more fun. It pairs apple and ginger in a bubbly mix that’s perfectly cozy in a copper mug.

The apple cider mule has become my go-to for fall and winter because it feels special and you can build it right in the glass, no cocktail shaker required. No shaking, no straining, just fresh ingredients poured right into the mug. The sweet-tart apple cider mellows the spicy kick of ginger beer and lime adds a lift to each sip!

Choosing your ingredients

The Moscow mule is a classic cocktail invented in the 1940’s, a pairing of vodka, lime, and ginger beer. My fall and winter spin is a mule with apple cider added: just enough so you can taste it, but not so much it waters down the other ingredients. I tinkered with the ratios to make this apple cider mule the perfect balance:

  • Vodka: I use a mid-range vodka here: nothing fancy needed since the other flavors are so bold.
  • Apple Cider: Fresh, unfiltered apple cider is my preference: this is the type that is cloudy that has the apple pulp and sediment. It has the boldest apple flavor.
  • Fresh Lime Juice: Bottled lime juice has a metallic taste that throws off the drink, so make sure to always use fresh lime juice.
  • Ginger Beer: Don’t use ginger ale! Ginger beer is spicier, more robust, and has actual ginger flavor.

How to make an apple cider mule

The mule is one of my favorite easy mixed drinks because here’s the thing: you can mix it all in a glass. No cocktail shakers required! The only thing you have to actually do is juice a lime.

Pour ¼ cup vodka, 1 tablespoon lime juice, and ¼ cup apple cider directly into your copper mug or glass. Give it a quick stir. Top with about ⅓ cup ginger beer and add ice.

The key is to add the ginger beer last and avoid stirring: you want to preserve those bubbles. Add a lime wedge and cinnamon stick and you’re done!

Making apple cider mules for a crowd

When I’m hosting, I prep a big batch of the mixer ahead of time. For 8 servings, I combine 2 cups vodka, 2 cups apple cider, and ½ cup fresh lime juice in a pitcher. Then I pour about ½ cup of the mixer into each copper mug and top with about ⅓ cup of ginger beer.

This method makes sure each drink has the right proportions. I set out a bucket of ice, bottles of ginger beer, and a tray of garnishes so guests can serve themselves. Then you’re not stuck playing bartender all night!

About those mugs

A traditional Moscow mule is served in a copper mug. Of course, you can serve this apple cider mule however you like! It looks great in a copper mug, but it also works in a low ball glass too.

  • Drinking out of ice cold copper brings another sensory element. The copper turns ice cold with the drink, giving another element to a sip. You can really taste the difference!
  • Copper mugs are used for tradition. Back in the 1940’s, the drink was originally served in copper. Photos of Hollywood celebs drinking mules in copper mugs were all over the place. It caught on, and it’s still the traditional way to drink this cocktail

You can use copper mugs for any type of drink, and they make great gifts, too. Here’s a link to some solid copper mugs on Amazon.
